On its 15th year, Salcedo Auctions maintains its edge, having concluded its highly successful first major event for the year last March, The Well-Appointed Life sale came on the heels of another blockbuster event, the February joint exhibition at the Goldenberg Mansion featuring the works of Lynyrd Paras and Joel Geolamen. The country’s premier auction house and taste arbiter kept the momentum with the opening of Chinese artist Liping Zheng’s exhibition, The Light Between the Leaves: An Homage to the Philippine Landscape last 8 April.
Zheng’s show, which was on view until 15 April, was an homage to his adoptive country’s landscapes, showing his deep connection to the Philippines, where he has lived as an expat economist for 17 years. In turn, the crowd that arrived for his vernissage last 8 April reveals how Zheng and his art have been embraced by his circle of friends and discerning art connoisseurs.
A self-taught painter, Zheng’s works are in the collections of prestigious institutions worldwide, including the National Art Museum of China, the China National Academy of Painting and Harvard University. Zheng has also earned acclaim, most notably from renowned Chinese art critic Sun Ke, who wrote in the June 2020 edition of Fine Arts:
“He learns from the ancients without being bound by tradition, adheres to nature while emphasizing inner spirit. His brushwork is bold and fluid; his use of color is dazzling yet refined. In my view, Zheng Liping’s style may best be described as a form of contemporary literati freehand flower-and-bird painting that follows tradition while emphasizing personal feeling and individuality. Distinctive and truly extraordinary.”
