DoH-7 on Code White Alert this Lent

The Department of Health Central Visayas for Health Development (DoH-7) declared on Wednesday a Code White Alert as it issued health reminders during Semana Santa 2025.

DoH-7 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas in his regional circular required all medical center chiefs, health officers and other concerned medical personnel to promote public health and safety during the religious observance.

The Code White Alert ensures that medical personnel and emergency response teams are on standby across the region to provide immediate care to patients during the expected increase in public activities.

Bernadas’ circular had 12 key tips to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals engaging in travel, fasting and religion activities.

Number 1 tip is reminding for all those traveling by car to inspect their vehicle’s condition, including tires, fluids, gas and brakes.

For people to remain alert and mindful of their belongings, especially when using public transportation or visiting crowded places.

For those joining religious processions or other physically-demanding activities, DoH-7 emphasizes the important of knowing one’s physical limits and taking breaks as needed.

“If participating in fasting, do so responsibly. Consult your doctor if you have underlying health conditions before fasting,” Bernadas said.

Bringing first-aid kit includes necessary medications is highly recommended for travelers and pilgrims.

DoH-7 encourages person to carry bottled water or oral rehydration salts to avoid heat-related illnesses. Umbrellas, hats and sunglasses should be used to shield oneself from the sun, along with the application of sunblock or sunscreen.

For food safely reminders, particularly for those buying meals from unfamiliar vendors. Practicing good hygiene is also vital especially hand washing, to prevent the spread of diseases in large gatherings.

The public is urged to avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks and maintain a balanced diet.

The circular underscores the importance of rest and reflection during the Holy Week, recommending adequate sleep and meaningful spiritual engagement.

People are reminded to manage stress and keep a strong mental outlook throughout the season.

And it is recommended to avoiding any risky behaviors and maintaining overall wellness for both physical and spiritual health.
