Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Umm Qasr, Iraq, recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully handling the HMM Daon, the largest container vessel to ever dock at the port. The vessel's arrival on 19 March marks a new benchmark for the terminal, solidifying its capacity to accommodate ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) and enhancing Iraq’s position in global trade.

The HMM Daon, a colossal vessel with a capacity of 16,010 TEUs, boasts impressive dimensions: a beam of 51 meters, a length overall of 365.16 meters, and a gross tonnage of 152,003. This ship is part of the Premiere Alliance consortium, which includes HMM, Yang Ming, and Ocean Network Express. The consortium facilitates imports primarily from China and the Far East, further strengthening Iraq’s trade links with some of the world’s largest economies.

The successful handling of such a massive vessel is a testament to BGT’s investment in modern infrastructure and advanced technology. Over the years, BGT has invested significantly in expanding its capabilities, including the addition of three post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes. These high-tech cranes, coupled with the terminal’s skilled workforce, ensure the smooth and efficient handling of ULCVs, making BGT the only terminal in Umm Qasr capable of accommodating 16,000-TEU vessels.

BGT’s state-of-the-art facilities include six berths, designed to cater to various types of cargo including general, project, and roll-on/roll-off (RORO) goods. With these resources, BGT has evolved into a high-performing multipurpose terminal that remains at the forefront of Iraq’s port infrastructure.

The handling of the HMM Daon also highlights the critical role BGT plays in supporting Iraq’s economic development. By facilitating seamless trade connections between Iraq and global markets, BGT contributes to the country’s growth while bolstering its position as a key player in regional and international shipping.
