Pillars of Philippine Cinema shine at Parangal ng Sining

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has just unveiled the luminaries set to be honored at this year's highly anticipated Parangal ng Sining. The annual celebration, themed Tradisyon at Ebolusyon: Ang mga Higante ng Kasaysayan ng Ating Pelikula will recognize both enduring legacies and contemporary triumphs in Filipino cinema.

This year's Lifetime Achievement Awards cast a spotlight on four iconic figures who have indelibly shaped the landscape of Philippine filmmaking. Former president Joseph Ejercito Estrada, a matinee idol before his foray into politics, will be recognized for his significant contributions to the industry. Joining him is the esteemed Charo Santos-Concio, a powerhouse actress and long-time president and CEO of ABS-CBN Corporation, whose influence extends far beyond the screen. The visionary director Laurice Guillen, known for her powerful storytelling and nuanced character portrayals, will also receive this prestigious accolade. Completing the roster of Lifetime Achievement honorees is the internationally acclaimed auteur Direk Lav Diaz, whose epic and thought-provoking films have garnered global recognition.

The Parangal ng Sining will also celebrate the remarkable achievements of contemporary artists who continue to push the boundaries of Filipino cinema. Judy Ann Agoncillo, a beloved actress, will be honored for her Annual Achievement, particularly highlighting her recent Best Actress win at the 2025 Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal for her compelling performance in Espantaho. Direk Antoinette Jadaone, the creative force behind the critically acclaimed film Sunshine, which clinched the Crystal Bear at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival, will also be recognized. Adding to the contemporary accolades is Direk Carl Joseph Papa, celebrated for his animated masterpiece Iti Mapupukaw, which took home the Best Animated Film award at the 2024 Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia.

The awards ceremony promises to be a momentous occasion, bringing together industry veterans, rising stars, and cinema enthusiasts to celebrate the rich history and dynamic evolution of Philippine film happening on 11 April at 5:00 PM, Seda Vertis North.
