The summer heat just got a whole lot hotter with the release of BGYO’s self-titled EP, a vibrant collection of tracks that showcases the group’s evolution and newfound confidence. Gelo, Akira, JL, Mikki and Nate have delivered a sonic experience that delves into the complexities of love and heartbreak, all while solidifying their unique pop sound.
The EP, featuring four English tracks (“Divine,” “Trash,” “Light My Fire” and “Heartstrings”) and one Filipino song (“Andito Lang”), represents a significant step forward for the group. The key track, “Divine,” with its infectious energy and visually stunning music video, perfectly encapsulates the EP’s summery vibe.
BGYO’s latest offering is a testament to their ambition and willingness to collaborate with international talent. “Divine,” “Trash” and “Light My Fire” were crafted with the help of global producers and songwriters, including US-based musician Dante Bowden. Notably, “Trash” has already garnered over 1.8 million Spotify streams, demonstrating the group’s growing international appeal.
However, the EP also highlights the strength of local collaborations. Christopher Lopez, aka Moophs, produced the powerful live band-sounding tracks “Heartstrings” and the previously released “Andito Lang,” co-written by Mikki. “Andito Lang” has nearly reached 900,000 Spotify streams, proving the resonance of its heartfelt lyrics and relatable themes.
BGYO’s journey has been marked by a willingness to experiment and explore different musical styles. From their early hits like “The Light,” “He’s Into Her,” “Best Time,” “Tumitigil Ang Mundo” and “When I’m with You,” which leaned towards a classic boy band sound, they have now embraced a more diverse and contemporary approach.
During a media scrum, the group confirmed that the self-titled EP signifies their discovery of their distinct identity and voice. “After four years of trying different things, we finally found where we fit and where we should be,” Nate explained.
Mikki added, “Making it self-titled is the perfect way to describe our EP is, like, reborn kami. After four years, confident na kami na sabihin na we have finally found our sound.”
