The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) degrees have been officially recognized for equivalency by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, offering career advancement opportunities for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the country.
UP President Angelo Jimenez highlighted that the recognition underscores the global competitiveness of UP education and its role in empowering Filipinos worldwide.
“This development will have a profound impact on the professional and economic mobility of our OFWs, enabling them to transition from high-risk, low-paying jobs to safer, more stable, and higher-income positions,” Jimenez said in a statement on 4 March.
He added that the accreditation would contribute to macroeconomic stability by boosting remittances and easing financial burdens on welfare services for OFWs.
OFWs with UPOU degrees previously faced challenges in career advancement due to the lack of recognition in the UAE.
Former UPOU Chancellor Melinda Bandalaria described the development as a reinforcement of the University's commitment to providing universal access to quality education through Open and Distance Learning.
