Rising star Atasha Muhlach was introduced by Studio Viva on Tuesday as the lead actress in the Philippine adaptation of Bad Genius: The Series. Showbiz royalty Muhlach takes on the challenging role under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Derick Cabrido, who was named Star Awards 2024 Movie Director of the Year for Mallari and received the International Film Fantasy Award for Best Director in 2020 for Clarita.
Muhlach will be joined by versatile young actor Jairus Aquino, alongside the newest loveteam, Gab Lagman and Hyacinth Callado.
She plays Lin, an intelligent high school student who earns a scholarship to one of the country’s most prestigious private schools. Coming from a public school, she faces significant adjustments but refuses to be intimidated. Determined to maintain her high grades and keep her scholarship, she soon finds herself helping others—at first out of generosity, but eventually turning it into a full-scale money-making scheme.
During a media conference, Muhlach revealed that she carefully considered the role before accepting it.
"First, I had to consult my family when this amazing project was offered to me. Then, I talked to my director—I even mentioned you, Direk! They said, ‘You're in good hands.’ I also want to thank my bosses for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity. This was something I couldn’t say no to, so I took the risk, and I’m happy I did," she shared.
She also expressed how much this debut project means to her.
"This is special for me because it’s my first series, and to be given this opportunity is a huge blessing. This is something I’ve wanted since I was a kid, and now that my dream is coming true, I don’t want to waste it. I want to give my best—my 100 percent—and I hope you all enjoy it," she added.
Joining Muhlach in her "cheating squad" is Jairus Aquino as Bank, one of the most intelligent students in his batch who initially sees Lin as competition but later joins her "business" due to financial struggles.
Hyacinth Callado plays Grace, Pat’s girlfriend and Lin’s first friend at the school, who wants high grades to qualify for the theater group and becomes Lin’s first client.
While Gab Lagman portrays Pat, a privileged student who only attends the prestigious school because of his family’s wealth. Though he struggles academically, he is skilled at money management and networking, serving as the spokesperson to attract clients for their cheating scheme.
Bad Genius, originally a Thai film about a straight-A student who devises a high-stakes cheating operation, broke box office records across Asia, becoming one of the most internationally successful Thai films.
In 2020, its series adaptation, Bad Genius: The Series, received multiple awards, including Best TV Drama Series and Best Screenplay. In 2023, India released its own adaptation, Farrey, in cinemas, and last year, an American remake was also released.
With its talented cast and compelling storyline, the Philippine adaptation of Bad Genius: The Series promises to bring a fresh and thrilling take on this acclaimed story.
