BALANGA CITY, Bataan — The SM City Bataan, in celebration of Earth Hour this March, has flexed its solar energy capacity of having a peak volume of 2,376,000 kilowatts (kW).
In a statement released on Monday, the SM City Bataan shows that the mall in the Province of Bataan has 4,060-piece solar photovoltaic (PV) panels that has a peak capacity of 2,376,000kW.
The move to showcase the mall’s sustainability is in line with the SM Supermalls in North Luzon’s thrust to “Illuminate Sustainability with Solar Energy Initiatives” thrust as part of the celebration of Earth Hour.
According to a representative of the mall, “SM Supermalls in North Luzon proudly spotlight their innovative commitment to sustainability through the solar panels installed across several locations, including SM City Bataan, SM City Tuguegarao, SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown, SM City Cauayan, SM City Urdaneta Central, SM City Cabanatuan, SM City Clark and SM Center Pulilan.”
The representative cited that the integration of solar energy into these malls has brought about a significant leap towards energy efficiency and cost savings.
“By tapping into the sun’s renewable power, these malls have reduced their reliance on conventional energy sources, leading to a more sustainable operation. This shift not only contributes to long-term cost savings but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions,”
The solar panels atop the SM City Bataan aims to save energy and create environmental benefits as the installation of solar panels plays a crucial role in mitigating power shortages.
“With the increasing demand for electricity and the challenges posed by fluctuating energy prices, having a renewable source of power helps ensure that these malls can operate smoothly, providing a comfortable shopping experience for the customers without interruptions.”
The use of solar panels is one of the many steps being taken by SM Supermalls to protect the planet for future generations.
The SM Supermalls are aggressively investing in renewable energy to enhance their operations and inspire the community to embrace sustainable practices.
This 2025 marks the 17th year of SM Supermalls’ participation in the Earth Hour Campaign, reaffirming their commitment to environmental sustainability.
SM will once again take part in the Global Lights Off initiative, where all participating malls will turn off non-essential lights as a symbolic act to conserve energy and raise awareness about climate change. Join the movement this March 22 at SM City Bataan and the rest of SM Malls for #SMEarthHour2025.
