BAGUIO CITY — The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), under the Department of Agriculture, is working on registering a strawberry variety from La Trinidad, Benguet, with the National Seed Industry Council.

BPI Agriculturist Juliet Ochasen revealed that they are aiming to have the “Sweet Charlie” variety officially registered. This is the variety most commonly planted by strawberry farmers in La Trinidad.

Currently, there are no registered strawberry varieties from La Trinidad or the entire country.

Ochasen explained that once “Sweet Charlie” is registered, it will be promoted as the official and standard strawberry produce of La Trinidad.

However, she emphasized that before registration, the BPI will thoroughly evaluate the variety to ensure its quality.

La Trinidad is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists, especially for its picturesque landscapes and strawberry farms.

The famous strawberry farm in the area, where visitors can pick their own strawberries, primarily grows the Sweet Charlie variety.
