DAVAO CITY — Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of Davao for their overwhelming sympathy and support for his father, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte (PRRD), following his recent arrest by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The former president is currently detained in The Hague, Netherlands.

Mayor Duterte visited their family residence in Dona Luisa Phase 1, Ecoland, on the evening of 13 March, where a large gathering of neighbors and supporters had assembled to express their dismay and frustration over PRRD’s arrest.

The crowd, who had gathered in solidarity with the Duterte family, began a prayer ceremony and candle lighting as a peaceful expression of their support.

There was a strong rumor circulating that a raid was going to take place at the Duterte residence, prompting many residents to flock to the area in a show of unity and defiance. However, officials from Police Regional Office (PRO) XI confirmed that the suspected raid was a false alarm.

“I would like to thank the Dabawenyos for your unwavering support for Tatay Digong and our family. Your show of solidarity means so much to us. You’ve all been incredibly supportive,” Mayor Baste Duterte said, addressing the gathered crowd.

The young Duterte also spoke to the Dabawenyos about the difficult situation his family is facing, emphasizing their readiness to face the consequences of the former president’s arrest. He acknowledged the emotional toll the recent events have taken on the community, especially those who have been standing vigil since PRRD’s detention.

“I am really relying on your support, Dabawenyos. Mabuhay kayo,” Mayor Baste added, urging the crowd to return home and rest after days of continuous rallying and showing their support for his father.

The night’s gathering was a testament to the unity and solidarity among Davao residents, with many participants expressing their loyalty and admiration for PRRD’s leadership.

In addition, Mayor Baste Duterte highlighted the upcoming "One Davao: Solidarity Night" on 16 March, which will be held at San Pedro Square in Davao City. Organizers of the event announced that the activity will serve as a night of unity, pride and gratitude for the Dabawenyos, a moment to celebrate their community spirit and show continued support for their beloved former president and his family.

As the situation continues to unfold, the support of the Dabawenyos remains a cornerstone of the Duterte family’s strength, as they navigate these challenging times together.
