President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Tuesday that the Philippine government complied with Interpol’s request to assist in delivering the arrest warrant to former President Rodrigo Duterte.
"Interpol asked for help, and we obliged because we have commitments to Interpol that we have to fulfill," Marcos said.
He added that if the government refused to assist, Interpol might no longer help the Philippines in cases involving Filipino fugitives abroad.
Interpol, or the International Criminal Police Organization, is an intergovernmental agency that supports global police forces in fighting crime.
As part of its mandate, Interpol shares data on police investigations, manages a database of crimes and criminals, provides investigative support, and coordinates police networks worldwide.
According to Marcos, the government's actions are in line with international expectations.
"This is what the international community expects of us as the leader of a democratic country that is part of the community of nations," he said.
On Tuesday evening, Duterte departed for The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity in connection with his bloody war on drugs.
