The National Bureau of Investigation in Central Visayas (NBI-7) on Wednesday, confiscated 228 bales of imported used clothing, known as ukay-ukay worth P752,000 in Barangay Kalubihan, Cebu City.
NBI-7 Regional Director Atty. Rennan Augustus Oliva told media that the occupants of the established failed to present permits or licenses to import the seized items.
The establishment was identified as GZ RTW Trading owned by Bea Zheng Ty.
The seized items were allegedly imported used clothing for South Korea.
Oliva cited violation of Republic Act 4653, which prohibits the commercial importation of used clothing to safeguard public health and maintain national dignity.
He disclosed that authorities are continuing their investigation with the suspicion that a large snuggling network behind the illegal importation.
As they are looking into the possibility that the same method is being used to smuggle other contraband, including illegal practitioners and uranium illegally smuggled in Mandaue City, Cebu.
He advised the public to stay vigilant.
