MakatiMed performs landmark cochlear implant surgery

DT

Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) has successfully performed its first cochlear implantation surgery, marking a significant advancement in its otolaryngology and pediatric services.

On 23 February 2025, a pediatric patient with congenital profound hearing loss in both ears underwent the procedure at MakatiMed. The surgery was conducted by a multidisciplinary team from the Section of Otology-Neurotology under the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, in collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics.

The surgical team included pediatric otolaryngologist Dr. Clydine Maria Antonette Barrientos, pediatric cardiologist Dr. Aurelia Leus, otorhinolaryngologists Dr. Erasmo Gonzalo D.V. Llanes and Dr. Gerard Lapiña, and anesthesiologist Dr. Rosario Loraine Moscare. Their collective expertise ensured a successful outcome, allowing the patient to gain access to sound and speech development.

Cochlear implantation is a procedure designed for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. Unlike traditional hearing aids, cochlear implants bypass damaged portions of the inner ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve, improving sound perception and communication abilities.

MakatiMed’s successful completion of the procedure highlights its commitment to advancing medical interventions and expanding access to specialized treatments for patients with hearing impairments.
