Before public service entered his life in 2022, ACT-CIS Rep. Erwin Tulfo, an aspiring senator consistently leading various surveys, had already made a great contribution to the government through his active participation in relentless efforts to develop the Pasig River Esplanade, a key element showcasing the beauty of Manila.
In 2019, Tulfo made the most of his platform as a broadcast journalist to promote the rehabilitation of the Pasig River, acknowledging its potential to improve urban renewal, boost tourism attraction, and provide recreational space for the public.
Although he had no hand in managing or overseeing the construction, the lawmaker was greatly involved in the discussion and developments concerning the Pasig River Esplanade by personally going to the community and meeting the area’s fisherfolk, whose livelihood had been adversely affected by the contaminated water.
Tulfo helped spread awareness about the clean-up efforts for Manila Bay and the Pasig River.
He was also engaged with experts spearheading the Pasig River rehabilitation, ensuring impartiality from both parties and amplifying the call to action.
Tulfo’s compassion for the fisherfolk, coupled with his fearless commitment to truth-telling, enabled over 12 million followers to get a grasp of the real plight of Manila Bay and the Pasig River at the time.
Years later, his dedication to giving a voice to the poor and marginalized took him to greater heights, allowing him to make an official debut in public service.
He was appointed to head the Department of Social Welfare and Development in June 2022 by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Five months after, he was named as the top-performing Cabinet member — proof that his drive for genuine service had resonated deeply with Filipinos, especially the disadvantaged.
Tulfo remains a key public official and has been at the forefront of Congress’ oversight and lawmaking efforts, tackling pressing issues Filipinos encounter daily, wrestling against unscrupulous individuals behind food price manipulation.
On top of the effort to reduce the cost of basic commodities, Tulfo also demands full equipment for every hospital, ensuring that all Filipinos have access to health care.
Moreover, he fiercely advocates for the rights of solo parents carrying the heavy responsibility of raising children alone. He pushes for easier access to medicine for senior citizens and champions capital support for jobless or underemployed Filipinos seeking to improve their livelihoods.
