Trump declares 9 Feb. 'Gulf of America Day"; Google Maps adjusts label

Google Maps has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users in the United States, following a proclamation by President Donald Trump.

The change came a day after Trump declared February 9 as "Gulf of America Day" while en route to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

However, the new label will only appear on Google Maps for US users, while the rest of the world will continue to see its original name, which has been in use for centuries.

Mexico has contested the move, arguing that the United States has no legal authority to rename the Gulf. Officials cited the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which limits a country’s sovereign control over territorial waters to 12 nautical miles from its coastline.
