Team effort keeps Flying Titans afloat

Choco Mucho setter Deanna Wong revealed that their collective effort is playing a major role in their resurgence in the ongoing Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.

Wong said they have displayed unity and solid teamwork in putting up a good fight against heavy contenders in the season-opening conference of the country’s top women’s club volleyball league.

In their previous game against powerhouse Akari over the weekend, the Flying Titans refused to give up as they bounced back from a second-set disaster with a strong collective effort in the third before going for the kill in the fourth to pull off an impressive 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory.

Veteran Sisi Rondina took charge of the attack zone while Dindin Santiago-Manabat manned the net with authority to power the Flying Titans to their fourth straight victory.

Now, Choco Mucho has a handsome chance of advancing to the playoffs with a 6-3 win-loss card behind leaders Creamline and Petro Gazz.

Wong said nobody can win alone.

“One person alone can’t win a game, so it’s important that we help each other,” the former Ateneo de Manila University star said.

“If there are lapses in receiving, we need to provide coverage — everything is connected.”

Wong said they may encounter some lapses, but Choco Mucho coach Dante Alinsunurin also emphasizes the value of recovery and pushing the team forward.

“Coach told us that we had a good start, but in the second set, we kind of relaxed. Good thing it was really a team effort,” referring to Alinsunurin, the mentor who guided the national men’s team to a silver medal in the 30th Asian Games in 2019.

Wong stressed that the job is far from done but with their discipline and trust in each other, bouncing back from a ninth-place finish in the previous Reinforced Conference after back-to-back runner-up performances will be possible.

“What’s important for us is that when one player is missing, we step up to fill the gap and help them get back into the game. It’s really all about teamwork, and I’m happy we got the win,” she said.
