In a world of rapid technological changes, acquiring digital literacy skills is considered essential for success. Basic computer use and even programming are now incorporated in the basic education curriculum to equip students with the knowledge needed to thrive in society.

But while the younger generation is becoming adept at technology, certain sectors — such displaced, unemployed, and disadvantaged women — are being left behind. Focused on household responsibilities and lacking computer skills, they face limited opportunities for economic empowerment.

Recognizing the positive impact of gender equality on economic growth, Aboitiz Foundation and Connected Women, launched its partnership for Elevate AIDA in 2024. Its goal: equip women with digital skills, specifically in Artificial Intelligence Data Annotation (AIDA). Implemented in collaboration with local government units, the program lets trainees access jobs they can do from the comfort of their homes.

More than just a training program, Elevate AIDA is a lifeline for many women who have been sidelined by traditional employment opportunities due to household responsibilities or economic difficulties. Trainees include stay-at-home mothers, single parents and displaced workers. There’s no age limit for participation so anyone — from working students to senior citizens — can join.

The success stories of Elevate AIDA’s beneficiaries are a testament to the program’s impact. Despite having a business administration degree, Katrina Bayutas of Toledo City, Cebu had to sacrifice her dreams of climbing the corporate ladder to care for her two young daughters. After completing the training, she was able to seek remote jobs, allowing her to work without leaving the home.

Aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on achieving gender equality, Elevate AIDA helps break down barriers and challenge traditional gender roles by providing women with the training they need to gain digital competence.

Paulyn Navia of San Juan, Batangas uses the skills she learned from the program to give back. She’s now an assistant trainer for Connected Women, rising from the ranks after starting out as a research assistant. Aside from having a stable job, Paulyn said the program gave her confidence to work independently and share her skills with others.

Wennice Bataan, a recent graduate of Elevate AIDA from Bukidnon, describes the program as life-changing. After leaving her job as a customer service representative to care for her newborn, she signed up for Elevate AIDA to gain digital annotation skills. Her training enabled her to find online jobs to support her family. By equipping women with in-demand competencies, Elevate AIDA supports SDG 8 by promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.

Elevate AIDA exemplifies the transformative power of technology and collaboration. The Aboitiz Foundation aims to empower 300,000 women nationwide, creating a ripple effect that benefits families and communities. With the support of our partners, we are working to ensure women are equipped with the digital skills needed to meet the demands of the modern world. By supporting women, we are building a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
