Washington, D.C. by night

The colossal landmarks of the United States capital city Washington D.C. are enduring testimonies of their abiding commitment to the principles and values of freedom and democracy. And these continue to be greatly revered up to this day.

Most casual tourists and not-to-be-missed students on assignments — curious all — usually flock to these historical monuments from early morning till late afternoon.

However, we suspect some more serious individuals drop by these huge shrines at night — all spectacularly lit up, offering new narratives to all onlookers.

Even Cecile our seasoned travel agent back home, and wholeheartedly endorsed by George our knowledgeable tour guide — both heavily insisted on an evening paseo de los monumentos.

After refreshing ourselves from an entire day of seemingly-endless explorations and new discoveries, and relaxing through a leisurely dinner, we — seniors though we are — ventured out once more into the darkness.

Washington Monument

By day, the standalone-by-the-Reflecting-Pool Washington Monument is an awe-inspiring obelisk piercing the sky. Its stark simplicity authentically symbolizes the first US President’s sheer unstoppable dedication to solidly establish the firm roots of a constitutional republic in the United States of America. It serves as a reminder of how he, though he could have claimed undisputed power and founded a monarchy across the Atlantic Ocean, instead he chose to step away after two presidential terms to retire in Mount Vernon in the state of Virginia.

At night, the austere monument mystically glows against the dark, which evokes an appreciative sense of gratitude and reverence, as if the essential being of Washington himself solemnly stands watch over the country he birthed.

Lincoln Memorial

At sunrise, the Lincoln Memorial is a hive of continuous activity, with visitors climbing its grand steps to stand before the impressive larger-than-life statue of Abraham Lincoln — and he was larger than life indeed — seated confidently on his massive armchair. With a stern expression — travelling buddies claimed a smile was slowly forming — it reminded us once more of his undying devotion to preserve the American Union. We recall from past visits through the years the always-present never-ending scaffoldings and the constant buzz of tireless workers and heavy equipment about — a symbol of continual care and upgrade at this popular site.

When evening falls, the memorial transforms. Soft lighting casts noticeable deep shadows across Lincoln’s face, while we reflected on the hallowed words etched into the walls — his universally-acclaimed Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address. Both resonated all the more!

Jefferson Memorial

Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the US, is celebrated in a circular, neoclassical temple along the Tidal Basin. In daylight, the white marble columns and domed roof exude an aura of liberty and unity.

As night envelops, the serene setting takes on an almost ethereal quality. The surrounding cherry trees — his favorite — frame Jefferson’s sculpture. Once again, we pondered on what it must have meant to push for freedom during the turbulent times of the Founding Fathers.

U.S. Capitol Building

During business hours, the US Capitol Building stands as a standout bustling hub of what America all stands for — nothing more, nothing less. The iconic vault is synonymous with the legislative power of the nation. We spotted officials and tourists alike around the perimeter, either rushing to important appointments, or just as a recreational sightseer.

Under the moonlit sky, the Capitol’s illuminated dome and lit-up windows suggests endless continuous activities and sleepless nights. Due to the stillness of the surroundings, we wondered if the policymakers-in-residence have taken time off to ponder on the weight of their choices, which eventually ripple across the world.

The White House

The workplace and residence of the President of the United States of America, radiates both documented history and absolute authority during the day. We have often marvel at its pristine façade and manicured gardens, always wondering about the goings-on within.

At sunset however, the President’s Mansion takes on a different aura. Similarly to the previous stop, the glowing windows suggest official activity, or just its inhabitants doing their nightly routines. It makes us wonder — can its residents find peace, respite, and tranquility, knowing they sleep in one of the most powerful buildings in the world? I remember during my childhood days, a maternal uncle used to say an often-quoted remark “When the White House coughs, the entire universe gets pneumonia.” I certainly have heard it before.

World War II Memorial

This massive sanctuary is a heartfelt tribute to those who have loyally served, and either sadly perished or remained victorious during the War in the fight to restore freedom around the globe.

As our eventide terminus, the memorial’s meaning deepens. The fountains are illuminated, which made each and every pillar stand out in the starry sky. We then paid homage to the countless civilians conscripted to join the war, unselfishly leaving — some even say abandoning — families and homes behind, perhaps never to be seen again, and even some others whose remains have never been found — bless their souls.

The nighttime stroll was definitely an eye-opener — an entirely different view of Washington, bar none. This was just a sneak peek of what else the city has in store when viewed from another perspective. There are definitely more.
