The Senate, through Resolution No. 1270, has commended Police Senior Master Sergeant Ryan Mariano and Correction Officer 1 Melvin Cabanal Magnaye for their extraordinary bravery during a shooting incident in Zamboanga City on 31 December 2024.
The resolution, co-sponsored on Monday, 20 January, by Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, vice chair of the Senate Committee on Public Order, highlights the officers' courage and dedication to public safety. Senator Ronald Dela Rosa was the principal sponsor.
In the incident, Mariano, on covert duty at a church, was injured in an armed confrontation. Magnaye, who witnessed the event, shielded a bystander with his vehicle and transported Mariano to the hospital, demonstrating quick action and bravery.
Senator Go underscored the vital role of law enforcement in maintaining peace and order, describing it as the foundation of a stable society. He also praised Mariano and Magnaye for their commitment to justice and the greater good.
"Their courage is not just seen in moments of action but in their commitment to justice, integrity, and the greater good," Go said during the Senate plenary session.
Go also highlighted the Duterte administration's efforts to improve the welfare of uniformed personnel, including doubling entry-level salaries for law enforcement officers. He called for continued support through better resources, facilities, and legislative initiatives.
As part of these efforts, Senator Go filed Senate Bill No. 422, which seeks to provide free legal assistance to armed forces and police personnel facing legal challenges related to their official duties.
Go also co-authored Republic Act No. 11549, reducing the height requirement for Philippine National Police (PNP) applicants, and supported RA 11200, which aligned PNP rank classifications with military standards.
"The acknowledgment and commendation of this honorable chamber to all our law enforcement officers are a simple gesture to honor and respect the sacrifices they have made for this country," Go concluded.
