Instagram has always used the classic 1:1 dimension on feeds since it was launched. However, the app recently introduced a rectangular layout on profile feeds, diverting from the square format.
The taller format can be more visually striking, capturing users’ attention and promoting longer viewing durations. With this, there can be an increase in engagement rates, including more likes, comments, and saves.
The new layout also gives users the opportunity to better showcase their content, making it easier to tell stories through photos.
The update also has its downsides. It may affect accounts with carefully curated feeds, disrupting the users’ aesthetic, as they adapt to a new format.
Moreover, the new feed layout reduces visibility of posts, requiring users to scroll more.
As of now, not every Instagram account has been updated to the new feed layout.
The update is part of Instagram’s ongoing commitment to improve user experience and adapt to changing content trends.
