Strong Group Athletics (SGA) is looking forward to a rousing performance as the Philippine ballclub competes in the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship scheduled 24 January to 2 February.
With members of the triumphant team that ruled the 43rd William Jones Cup returning for another tour of duty, head coach Charles Tiu could not help but feel excited.
Korean Basketball League veterans Rhenz Abando and Dave Ildefonso have confirmed their participation after their success in the Jones Cup where SGA won all eight games to secure the title.
Also joining from the Jones Cup winning team are Ange Kouame, Tony Ynot, Justine Sanchez, and Season 100 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Most Valuable Player Allen Liwag.
“With Kevin Quiambao, JD Cagulangan, and Jordan Heading now in the pros, much is expected from Rhenz and Dave,” Tiu said.
“They’ve both proven themselves on big stages before, but this tournament will be a test of their ability to lead and deliver under pressure.”
Also returning to SGA is Andray Blatche, who was part of last year’s Dubai squad that lost to Al-Riyadi of Lebanon in the final.
Tiu said the former Gilas Pilipinas player is a lot fitter and is ready for redemption.
“He’s come in better shape for sure. He wants to come back with a vengeance, and he looked much better today,” Tiu said.
“Let’s see how he progresses.”
Apart from winning the title, Tiu also expects collegiate standouts Ynot, Sanchez and Liwag to learn and improve after their heartbreaking loss to Mapua University in the NCAA finals last December.
“It’s great to have guys stay with the program. We also have a few new recruits coming in, so the competition for spots will be tough this season,” Tiu said.
“I hope the finals experience last year made them hungrier. We’re aiming for growth similar to what Mapua achieved. But maturity takes time, so it’s too early to tell.”
