The Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) has requested the assistance of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct a parallel investigation into a stabbing incident that occurred inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) on Thursday morning.

The attack resulted in the death of one person deprived of liberty (PDL) and left two others injured.

In a letter sent Friday, signed by Bucor Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Secretary Al Perreras, the Bureau formally asked the NBI and PNP to independently investigate the incident.

The goal is to establish the facts, ensure transparency and determine accountability in the death of PDL Ricardo Peralta (Prison No. N224P-1485) and the wounding of PDLs Reginal Lacuerta (Prison No. N220P-1974) and Bert Cupada (Prison No. N223P-1537).

C/Supt. Roger Boncales, Acting Superintendent of NBP, was instructed by Perreras to submit a comprehensive incident report and fully cooperate with the investigations by the NBI and PNP.

Boncales reported that Peralta’s body was claimed last night by his common-law wife, Lalune Gabriel. Lacuerta and Cupada, both of whom sustained stab wounds, were transported to Ospital ng Muntinlupa for treatment.

Four PDLs believed to be involved in the incident are currently under investigation.
