BAGUIO CITY — The head of the Abra Provincial Police Office (PPO) pledged tighter security measures after noting a doubling of shooting incidents in 2024 compared to the previous year.
According to the Abra Police, 40 shooting incidents were recorded from January to December 29, 2024. Most of these shootings occurred in the province’s capital town of Bangued, with 13 incidents reported. However, the number of victims was not provided.
Only six of the 27 municipalities in Abra had no recorded shooting incidents in 2024.
Police claimed arrests were made in 32 of the incidents. Law enforcement officials attributed most of the cases to quarrels fueled by intoxication.
Abra PPO Provincial Director Gilbert Fati-ig said he instructed all provincial police units to intensify patrols, both mobile and on foot. He also emphasized the need for more checkpoints, noting that many suspects were using motorcycles or larger vehicles.
Meanwhile, police reported more than 200 vehicular incidents in the province, primarily involving motorcycles.
League of Mayors of the Philippines (LMP) National President and former Abra Congressman Joseph Sto. Niño "JB" Bernos called the police report alarming. He stressed that shootings and all other forms of violence in Abra must be stopped. He added that police visibility and community cooperation are crucial in achieving this goal.
