Rizal’s ideals continue to inspire AFP

NORTHERN MINDANAO — The 4th Infantry Division (4ID) of the Philippine Army, here, pointed out that Rizal’s vision for a free and prosperous Philippines continues to inspire and guide the efforts of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), especially in the context of the army’s ongoing mission to maintain peace, order and security in this region.

The 4ID joined the entire nation in marking the 128th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Philippine National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Monday, 30 December, through a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument, Plaza Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City.

Colonel Leo E. Bongosia, the Division’s inspector general and acting chief of staff, who represented Major General Jose Maria R. Cuerpo II, commander of the 4ID, said Rizal’s ideals has continued its relevance of freedom, education, and patriotism in today’s society.

Colonel Bongosia was joined by Atty. Edgar Cabanlas, City Councilor for District 2, represented Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando “Klarex” A. Uy as the honoree for the day’s ceremony.

The flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument served as a moment of reflection for the people of Cagayan de Oro and the entire nation, remembering the sacrifices and heroism of Dr. Rizal, who was executed on 30 December 1896.

The activity was organized by the City Government of Cagayan de Oro in close collaboration with the 4th Infantry Division, the Philippine National Police and other local and national government agencies.

Colonel Bongosia said: “Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s dedication to his country and his belief in the power of education and peaceful reform should be a reminder to all of us, especially to those in public service. The 4th Infantry Division, together with our partners in local government and other stakeholders, is committed to carrying forward the ideals that Dr. Rizal fought for fostering a society that values justice, unity, and progress.”

This year’s commemoration highlighted the strong collaboration between the military and civilian sectors in preserving the nation’s history and advancing the shared mission of peace and development.

Meanwhile, The Knights of Rizal Zamboanga City Chapter and Free Accepted Mason of the Philippines in collaboration with the City Government of Zamboanga City hosted the 128th commemoration of the martyrdom of Rizal in this city.

The commemorative program started with the Philippine National Anthem’s singing and the Philippine flag’s hoisting, followed by the recital of “Mi Último Adiós” (My Final Farewell).

The short but meaningful event was held at the foot of the Rizal Shrine. at the Rizal Park fronting Zamboanga City Hall at 7 a.m. on Monday.
