Ilocos Norte doctors shielding drunk drivers?

The Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO) revealed Tuesday that some doctors in Ilocos Norte, particularly in public hospitals, allegedly refuse to issue medical certificates required to charge drunk drivers.

Republic Act 10586, or the “Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013,” mandates that a medical doctor administer and certify the results of sobriety and alcohol tests.

This refusal has led to drunk driving cases being dismissed in court, as the absence of a medical certificate makes it impossible for the police to file charges successfully.

The INPPO expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation, stressing its detrimental impact on public safety and justice. Public anger is growing, with calls for accountability from doctors accused of neglecting their duty to uphold community safety.
