Senator Loren Legarda on Monday underscored the importance of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) in strengthening the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between the Philippines and Japan.

In explaining her affirmative vote for the Senate resolution concurring in the RAA's ratification, Legarda said, “I trust that this Agreement strengthens our nation’s security and reinforces our regional partnerships at a time when collaboration is crucial.”

She emphasized that the RAA facilitates joint military training, disaster response, and humanitarian operations while reinforcing commitments to regional peace and stability. Legarda noted that these principles were central to discussions during the 31st Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), which the Philippines hosted last year.

Legarda further described the RAA as a legal framework aimed at enhancing confidence-building measures that "effectively alleviate tensions, proactively prevent disputes, and mitigate escalation of ongoing disputes in the Asia-Pacific region."

Having previously sponsored similar agreements, including the Status of Visiting Forces Agreement with Australia, Legarda highlighted the tangible benefits of such partnerships.

“I have seen firsthand how these strategic partnerships enhance our defense capabilities, ensure better preparedness, and bolster our national sovereignty,” she said.

“My vote is a vote for a stronger Philippines, a safer region, and a future built on collaboration with like-minded nations,” she added, expressing her honor in concurring with the ratification of the Philippines-Japan Reciprocal Access Agreement.
