The Benilde Fashion Museum will hold its first public workshop on textile and clothing conservation on 18 and 19 December.

Entitled “Preservation Across Borders,” the two-day lecture will be facilitated by Japanese textile specialist Mie Ishii Ph.D., professor of Art and Regional Design at the Saga University, and Aesthetic and Art History at the Keio University Faculty of Literature.

Ishii specializes in cultural assets study and museology, fine art history, clothing and dwelling life, aesthetics and studies on art, and history of Asia and Africa. She will equip participants with a comprehensive overview of basic preservation and documentation of textiles.

She is set to impart the best practices of professional conservators in Japan, which may serve as a benchmark in the creation of an educational resource, collections care, and preventive conservation system for Philippine fashion and textile heritage. The well-respected lecturer will share several tips and techniques on the proper storage and display of the items, from textile to garments.

“In order to protect and pass down cultural heritage to future generations, my goal is to promote international joint research in the belief that conservators in cultural heritage sectors will benefit by learning about diverse ideas and approaches from each other,” Ishii stated.

“Preservation Across Borders” is organized in collaboration with the Fashion Design and Merchandising Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Environment and Design and Japan Foundation Manila. It is scheduled for 18 December, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 19 December, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held on the Fourth Floor of the DLS-CSB Design + Arts Campus, 950 P. Ocampo Street, Malate, Manila. For more information, visit facebook.com/BenildeCampusArt.
