BuCor eyes idle lands for agri production

The Bureau of Correction on Thursday revealed that it is seeking the cultivation of idle lands in possession of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for agricultural production.

BuCor director general Gregorio Catapang Jr. said that they are eyeing a possible memorandum of agreement with the DENR which is pushing the environment agency to temporarily place its idle lands under BuCor supervision for the purpose of cultivation.

Catapang stressed that he wants the BuCor to become self-sufficient in the near future as the agency has been pushing for agricultural production in idle landholdings of the bureau in its prison facilities nationwide.

He cited that the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan has been cultivating its vast land since last year under the Reformation Initiative for Sustainable Environment for Food Security that was signed between the Department of Justice and the Department of Agriculture.
