Russia fires 99 missiles on Ukraine

Ninety-nine Russian missiles rained on Ukraine Tuesday killing four people, including one in Kyiv, and wounding 27 others in the capital, officials said.

"One wounded elderly woman from a building in the Solomyansky district… died in an ambulance. Twenty-seven wounded people were hospitalized," Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko said.

Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko said two people were killed in the Kyiv region.

The missiles also hit the northeastern city of Kharkiv and its head, Oleg Sinegubov. said one woman was killed in the attack.

The attacks came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to intensify strikes on Ukraine.

Kyiv said 72 of the missiles were shot down and some of the broken parts hit high-rise buildings and sparked fires.

More than a dozen loud explosions were heard in Kyiv by Agence France-Presse journalists on Tuesday morning as air defenses worked, shaking buildings in the city center.

In Kharkiv, "at least four strikes" damaged multi-story buildings and civilian infrastructure in the center, the head of the city's military administration, Oleg Sinegubov, said.

Tuesday's attacks come a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said his forces would intensify strikes on military targets after an unprecedented Ukrainian attack over the weekend on the Russian city of Belgorod.

Meanwhile, Poland said it had dispatched four F-16 fighter jets to its eastern border on Tuesday to protect its airspace.

During the last wave of deadly attacks on Ukraine on Friday, Poland said a Russian missile had passed through its airspace.
