BI, UN host SEA travel data forum

In a bid to strengthen regional security, the Southeast Asia Regional Informal Working Group on Advance Passenger Information, Passenger Name Record and other traveler data held its inaugural meeting on 6 December.

Over 100 delegates from 10 nations and member states, representing law enforcement, civil aviation, and counterterrorism agencies, gathered for the two-day forum hosted by the Bureau of Immigration in partnership with the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism..

The goal of the IWG is to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of national PNR and API systems, including the setup and operations of Passenger Information Units.

The data, encompassing traveler information like passport numbers, addresses, and contact details, plays a crucial role in border security and counterterrorism efforts.

In the Philippines, the API data is integrated into the Bureau's Advance Passenger Information System, enabling prior vetting and trend analysis for enhanced border management. The system adds another layer of security against external threats, including international terrorism.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco underscored the importance of a shared understanding among member states regarding data utilization. He envisioned the IWG as a platform for peer-to-peer support and mutual learning among participating countries.

With experts from the UN and other international organizations, along with international analysts participating as presenters and panelists, Tansingco expressed confidence in achieving the IWG's objectives.
