Strong quake jolts Occidental Mindoro, metro

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology logged a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that jolted Occidental Mindoro and was felt in parts of Metro Manila on Tuesday afternoon.

The epicenter of the earthquake, a tectonic in origin, was logged at 13.84°N, 120.18°E-007 km S 76° E of Lubang in Occidental Mindoro and has a depth of 60 kilometers.

Phivolcs recorded Intensity 5 in Lubang and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro; Intensity 4 in cities of Makati, Taguig and Quezon City in Metro Manila; Malolos, Meycauyan, Obando and Plaridel in Bulacan.

Intensity 3 was logged in Caloocan, Pasig, Cuenca and Talisay in Batangas; Bacoor and General Trias in Cavite; Rodriguez, Rizal; Mamburo, Occidental Mindoro; Intensity 2 in Marikina and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan; Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija; Lucban, Quezon; San Mateo, Rizal; and Odiongan, Romblon.

The tremor was felt at Intensity 1 in San Fernando, Pampanga; San Pedro, Laguna; and Mauban, Quezon province.

Phivolcs also logged instrumental intensities in Magallanes and Tagaytay City in Cavite at Intensity 5; Intensity 4 in Malabon; Guiguinto and Pandi, Bulacan; Laurel, Lemery, and San Luis in Batangas; and in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro; Intensity 3 in Quezon City; Batangas City; and was Intensity 1 in Lucban, Quezon.

The seismic bureau also said aftershocks are expected after this tremor.

Meantime, the Manila International Airport Authority announced that its engineering and operations teams immediately inspected the airport's airside and terminal infrastructure following the earthquake.
