Villar bats anew for journalist protection bill after broadcaster’s killing

Senator Mark Villar on Monday stressed the need to increase the protection for Filipino journalists after a radio anchor was killed while on media duty.

Villar pushed anew the passage of Senate Bill 2335 or the Journalist Protection Act, "because I recognize the hazard that comes with the journalism profession. Yet, it still comes as disheartening to know the killing of Mr. Juan Jumalon while practicing his profession," he said.

Villar said the passage of SB 2335 would provide additional insurance coverage such as disability and death benefits and reimbursement of medical costs for journalists and employees of media entities.

He said the bill has already been referred to the proper Senate Committee and is awaiting further legislative action.

Juan Jumalon is the fourth journalist killed under the current administration.
