Teodoro sees procurement law amendments to boost AFP modernization

Defense chief Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said on Friday that possible amendments to the procurement law for the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be likely.

In a recent media interview during an event in Cebu City, Teodoro said revising the policy on purchasing military assets for the AFP will come along with the government's effort to boost the country's self-defense posture, which is firmly backed by various legislators from the Senate and the House of Representatives.

"I am happy to report that the Congress has promised us two things: the amendment of the modernization law and the procurement law of the Armed Forces," he told reporters.

"Number two, the strengthening of our self-reliant defense program or posture. That means to say, we will be able to invest long-term as equity partners or as purchasers for locally manufactured defense goods and equipment," he added.

Teodoro said the proposed amendments "are not only envisioned to fortify the country's defense capabilities but also to invigorate economic growth and development" of the country, including a substantial boost to various industries in Cebu.

The defense chief urged lawmakers to expedite the legislative process of these amendments.

"We are waiting eagerly for these amendments by the end of the year, so that next year, we can start to leverage the talents and the abilities of the people of the province of Cebu," he said.
