DA optimistic on onion price decrease

The Department of Agriculture on Friday is optimistic that onion prices will go down during the harvest season by mid-January 2023.

According to DA Undersecretary and spokesperson Kristine Evangelista, the Agriculture department has signed an administrative circular earlier this week, setting the price of red onion to P250 per kilogram.

Evangelista added that some vendors assured that onion prices would go down after the holiday season.

"The harvest would increase by the middle of January, so the price points would change again," Evangelista said. "That is why we will revisit the suggested retail price and maybe the price will drop further."

Evangelista said that the Agriculture department will closely coordinate with the Department of Trade and Industry and Price Coordinating Council as onion's SRP is still high, around P550 per kilogram amid the recently released administrative circular.
