Wong seeks breather

Newest wushu sweetheart Agatha Wong sees the remaining days of the year as the time to recharge after a tough and stellar year of trainings and competitions.

Showing her full might and flare that led her to two gold medals in the recent edition of 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Wong now plans to take a quick breather from her eventful year.

“This December, I’m just trying to relive my 2019,” said Wong, who also bagged a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games.

“I’m really honored to represent the Philippines in a caliber of competition like SEA Games. Bringing home not just a medal, but two medals, it made me really really happy. You know it’s not an easy feat. I’m just really grateful for the opportunity.”

The 21-year old Filipina said majority of her 2019 was really intended to hone her craft. Now, she wants to pick up the responsibilities that she left.

“Before this break, I was training almost a year for the SEA Games. It was about eleven months,” the College of St. Benilde product said.

“Now, I’m trying to cram whatever I missed like reviving my social life and spending more time with my family.”

Even with the bountiful aftermath of her golden finishes, Wong remained cool and does not let herself get stressed on worrying about the ample incentives she had received from the government.

For her, it was purely all about her passion for the game.

“Right now, I’m still young, and I really didn’t think about the incentives before I won and even after winning,” she said.

Wong welcomed the short break before facing another year full of competitions in 2020.

“I might begin next year with World Cup in Japan since I qualified for that. Then, I might go to Asian Championships in India and World Championships in Italy,” she said.

“I think I’m just going to see where it takes me. Right now, I’m just really focusing on sports. I will be competing in a lot of tournaments next year.”
