Lambanog kills 8, makes 129 ill

A NUMBER of deaths in the past had been attributed to faulty lambanog production.

At least eight persons died while 129 others were hospitalized, including seven in need of critical care at the Philippine General hospital, after drinking lambanog or locally distilled liquor in the town of Rizal in Laguna Sunday.

About 21 were in need of urgent medical care after ingesting the alcoholic drink whose manufacturer had suspended operation after news of the deaths spread in the province.

Town mayor Vener Muñoz declared a state of emergency in order to help the victims by accessing contingency funds.

Samples of the lambanog were collected and will be sent to the Food and Drug Administration for toxicity tests.
