How to thrive as a multi-hyphenate

Being able to appreciate the little things that you receive or experience at any moment in time is key. Life is unpredictable and one should never end a day on a bad note because tomorrow is uncertain

In familial terms, a mother isn’t called the light of the house for nothing. Their ability to keep the whole household in place is already a great feat in itself. For a lady who is still on a personal exploration with herself, her capacity to finish any task at hand, whether it be lady-like or dirty work, is already a big achievement.

But what if they’re more than just what they are known to be doing? They are more, indeed. In this day and age, people shouldn’t be surprised anymore. Women are able to do things the opposite gender does and they do things even better sometimes.

She Talks Asia and Celeteque conduct Tribe-Meet Up: The Toolkit for Every Multi-Hyphenate to bring together astonishing, multi-hyphenated women in one room to share their experiences and talk about things that inspire others to do more and be more than expected. They aim to inspire women to break stereotypes and take on more roles than women are accustomed to having.

Present multi-hyphenated personalities were news anchor and segment producer Danie Laurel, Kabataan partylist rep. Sarah Elago, science communication researcher Kami Navarro and TV personality and Celeteque brand ambassador Gretchen Ho.

As the epitome of multi-hyphenates, these women were able to share their experiences with the attendees of the event, providing them with insightful words about their every day, multi-hyphenated lives.

Below are some of the important takeaways during the talks:

Avoid being stuck in traffic. Being involved in a morning show, Danie has to be at the studio by 7 a.m. But in Metro Manila, traffic is pretty much everywhere. How does she do it? Simple: sleep early, wake up early. Start the day early. That way, she accomplishes more.

Learn to love the people you work with. Or else it’s going to be hell, they said. Gretchen’s advice is to just be nice and eventually, relationships with workmates get better.

Have moments of solitude. With all the happenings in life, it’s important to find your Zen. Gretchen even joked that she’s “tumatanda na (getting old)” because of how she loves to stare at plants while drinking coffee during her downtime. Nevertheless, she appreciates and gives importance to those peaceful moments. They keep her sane.

Know that someone is there to support you. As a victim of bullying when she was younger, Rep. Sarah shares that despite being bullied, there’s always going to be at least one percent who’s going to side with you so you have to hold on to them and let them be your source of hope.

Time is a blessing. “Yesterday is not yours anymore and tomorrow may never come so that’s how important this moment is,” Rep. Sarah stated. Being able to appreciate the little things that you receive or experience at any moment in time is key. Life is unpredictable and one should never end a day on a bad note because tomorrow is uncertain.

Don’t be distracted by social media. Kami shares that she deletes her social media accounts during workweeks and it really helped her. “That actually makes me unforcedly productive because I don’t have these notifications popping up all the time. Have the bravery to delete all these distractions during the workweek; never mind, you can have fun during the weekends,” she mused.

Finally, the Tribe Meetup ended with a break-out session, a close encounter with the multi-faceted women who talked before them, where everyone delved deeper into discussions about what it takes to take on multiple roles in one’s life.
