Post-Christmas partial solar eclipse in Phl

State weather bureau PAGASA on Saturday revealed that a partial solar eclipse will be visible in the southern part of the Philippines a day after Christmas.

In a statement, PAGASA said that the annular eclipse of the sun will be seen in some areas of Davao Occidental and advised that the best site to observe the phenomenon will be in Balut and Batulaki, Sarangani Islands.

The state weather bureau added that all other parts of the country will observe it as a partial solar eclipse.

The annular eclipse happens when the moon is farthest from Earth.

Because the moon is farther away than usual from Earth, it seems smaller and does not block the entire view of the sun, creating a “ring of fire” effect, PAGASA added.

The eclipse will also be visible in some parts of Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates.
