Antique airport completed by 2020

Upon completion, the Antique Airport becomes one of the region’s gateways to attracting more tourists and business opportunities and connecting rural communities to urban centers.

Bicol infrastructure giant Verzontal Infrastructure Corp. (VIC) targets to complete the construction of the Antique Airport Development Project by the third quarter of 2020.

The enterprise bared this on Wednesday and said the P283-million project will connect the region to the capital and neighboring cities.

The Antique Airport development project, which was awarded to Verzontal in December last year, will include “green technology” that showcases louver type window panels and a green roof for better heat, rain absorption and air quality.

According to VIC, the structure will also have natural plants such as water lily stalks and banana bark as wall placements for ventilation support.

“Together with the Department of Transportation (DoTr), Antique Airport will be one of the newest ‘green airport’ in the region, following Mactan Airport in Cebu to bring further connectivity to the Filipino people,” VIC vice chairman and CEO Bede Gomez said.

“We take pride in anchoring not only innovative infrastructure but sustainable and environmentally focused projects as well,” he added.

Antique Representative Loren Legarda recently requested to fast track the completion of the project and wished to revisit the plan to include the installation of solar panels, a vertical garden, a rain-catching system and non-corrosive materials for the new terminal.

Given the construction plan and land acquisition, VIC chairman Dennis Macandog is bullish in completing the project by August 2020, based on a recent discussion with DoTr Undersecretary Tamayo and Legarda.

The Antique Airport project includes the rehabilitation of the passenger terminal building, landside and airside facilities, and a strip grade correction with the improvement of the drainage system.

The expansion project will allow the facility to accommodate significantly more passengers and flights.

Apart from the Antique Airport, Verzontal has an ongoing project in the region, the Justice Calixto Zaldivar Memorial Hospital.

VIC hopes to reinvigorate the countryside with functional and efficient social infrastructure by connecting rural communities to urban centers.
