DPWH kicks off Samar bypass roads construction

The construction of the bypass road project connecting Barangay Magallanes and Barangay Guirang in Basey, Samar has already started, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) revealed on Thursday.

According to the DPWH, once completed, the bypass road is seen to boost tourist attraction in the areas which are made more accessible through the project.

Home to the popular Sohotan National Park and Balantak Falls, the bypass road is expected to increase tourism in the town of Basey by reducing travel time from almost three and a half hours to one and a half hour.

“We expect to complete the 5.15-kilometer bypass road, including the construction of a 564-lineal meter wharf by 2020 to open Basey to more tourists and business opportunities,” said DPWH Secretary Mark Villar.

Villar also added that since Basey is known for different cottage industries like mat weaving, pottery and furniture making, the project is also seen to open different kinds of business and job opportunities for the locals.

The project’s implementation was undertaken by the Regional Office 8 and Samar Second District Engineering Office (DEO).

The project is funded under the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a total budget of P80 million.
