Aero, construction, energy workers to remain grounded

The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) is looking at limiting the deployment abroad of aeronautics, construction and energy workers.

“We want to limit the deployment outside the country of workers under the energy sector, specifically petro chemists; and also CNC machinist, which is related to the aero space sector,” DoLE Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay said in a recent interview.

Tutay said there is a shortage of such workers for local establishments.

“We will be meeting with these sectors to check if our supplies are still enough or if they need more so that we can still limit deployment,” said Tutay.

Tutay said the agency is also looking at keeping the slowdown in deployment of construction workers overseas due to high demand for manpower for the Duterte administration’s infrastructure projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program.

“We’re still looking at construction workers because we really are running short of workers in the construction sector,” said Tutay.

To recall, the Philippine government started slowing down the overseas deployment of construction workers by as much as 90 percent earlier this year to meet the manpower shortage in the local construction industry.
