High hopes for Phl polo squad

The Philippine polo team is hoping it will be all systems go for the 0-2 goals division in the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the Miguel Romero Polo Field in Calatagan, Batangas despite the threat of Typhoon “Tisoy.”

Polo competition officials remained optimistic the Romero Field will still be playable when the typhoon slams Bicol Region – particularly Catanduanes – on Tuesday.

In a statement, Phl polo team captain and 1-Pacman party-list Rep. Mikee Romero said they are praying the typhoon will not devastate the venue as they are all raring to launch their gold medal bid.

He added that if the field is not playable, the four-day event will be moved to Wednesday and the final on Sunday.

Other members of the team are Coco Garcia, Nicole Eusebio, Jam Eusebio and Santi Juban, all eager to go after the country’s finals defeat to Malaysia in the 4-6 goals division on Sunday.

“Everybody is determined to contribute to the country’s bid to win the overall championship and we are all inspired after the explosive first day,” said Romero.

Apart from Malaysia, also out to beat the Phl team are Indonesia and the powerhouse team of Brunei.

Princes Jeffri and Qawi will spearhead Brunei’s gold medal bid.
