Social media giants Facebook and Instagram were reported to be down on Thursday with thousands of app users claiming they were unable to refresh their feeds or upload photos or videos.

Down Detector, which tracks and analyzes downtime and monitors users’ experience, reported that 36 percent of Facebook users experienced log in problems, 33 percent had issues with their newsfeeds and 29 percent experienced a total blackout.

When trying to access Facebook, some users were met with an error message that read: “Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes.”

As for Instagram, 74 percent of users said they experienced problems with the newsfeed, 14 percent with Stories and 10 percent with the website.

Many users have switched to Twitter, where both #instagramdown and #facebookdown tags were trending topics.

Facebook Messenger users were likewise unable to send or receive messages.

In March, Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger all stopped working for nearly an entire day in what was believed to be the biggest outage in the company’s history.

Another significant outage took place in July, lasting around 12 hours. The reason for the outage was not revealed but Facebook blamed a “server configuration change.”

Before midnight Thursday, Facebook users in the Philippines were still experiencing log-in problems.

Neither Instagram nor Facebook have issued a comment on the outages.
