Federer-Zverev match sets world record attendance

The most-attended match in tennis history is officially located in a Mexican bullfighting arena.

Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev set the record on Saturday night in an exhibition event called “The Greatest Match,” which also featured a doubles undercard between American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan against Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and Santiago Gonzalez.

A total of 42,217 fans were in attendance at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City, shattering the nine-year 35,681 record held by Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters from a similar exhibition in the latter’s home country of Belgium.

The event was the fourth leg of a five-country tour that have already taken Federer and Zverev to Chile, Argentina and Colombia, which was canceled due to a curfew in Bogota resulting from an ongoing political crisis.

Ecuador is the fifth and final stop of the duo’s Latin American tour.

Roger Federer and Alex Zverev are beyond belief over the Mexicans’ support.

The new record might not stand for long as Federer and fellow all-time great Rafael Nadal will play in South Africa on 7 February 2020.

The location: Cape Town Stadium with a capacity of 55,000.

“The Match in Africa 6” benefit game of the Roger Federer Foundation sold out in 10 minutes last September.
