A potential mass shooting in South Los Angeles was averted Friday when police found and seized a semi-automatic rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition in the home of a student who threatened to shoot his classmates and school staff.

A 13-year-old student of Ánimo Mae Jemison Charter Middle School in Willowbrook and an adult member of his family were both arrested Friday over the weapon and bullets as well as a name list of targets and a hand-drawn map of the school, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday. The two are facing charges of criminal threat and weapons-related offenses.

The arrest was made a week after a 16-year-old boy opened fire on his classmates at Saugus High School killing three and wounding three others, including himself.
