Subic to hold 7th recyclables event

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is gearing up for the 7th Recyclables Collection Event (RCE) as part of the agency’s thrust to keep this premier Freeport clean.

According to SBMA chairman and Administrator Wilma T. Eisma, the RCE is a bi-annual program of the Ecology Center of the agency that provides micro small medium enterprises (MSME) inside the Subic Bay Freeport a venue to properly dispose their “not so common” waste.

She said that event will be held on 19 November at the former mini golf course, near the administration building of the SBMA. “It’s just a walk away from the biggest flag in Subic Bay Freeport,” she added.

Activities for the 7th RCE is the Refill Revolution that is in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources — Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region 3. The goal of the Refill Revolution is to reduce plastic pollution by reducing waste from single-use plastics.

Participants of the event can buy powdered detergent, fabric conditioner, dishwashing liquid and hand soap for a cheap price, as long as they bring their own containers. “This is to educate the masses to buy products by retail with wholesale price by bringing their own containers,” Eisma said.

Another activity is the Trash for Rice by the Social Development Program of Asia Processing Industry Association of Subic. The activity aims to collect 1,000 kilograms of clean and dry plastic, sando bags, sachet and cigarette butts in exchange for rice.

Eisma said that a kilo of single use plastic will get you one kilo of rice, while half a kilo of cigarette butts will also get you one kilo of rice. A maximum of 10 kilograms of rice is limited per pre-registered Subic Bay Freeport locator.
