Infra projects boost Iloilo sugar industry

Iloilo’s Sugar industry is expected to get a shot in the arm once the construction of new farm-to-mill roads in Passi City, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

In a statement Friday, the DPWH revealed that it is currently building a new road and a bridge linking villages in Passi City.

The road construction aims to provide easy access to services and further supporting farmers and residents in the area.

Public Works Secretary Mark Villar expressed confidence that the said infrastructure projects could help boost the agricultural production and economic activities of the sugar-rich city.

Villar said the ongoing construction of the 2.5-kilometer road and 80-meter bridge connecting Barangay Gines Viejo to Barangay Man-it in Passi City will facilitate easier transport of trucks carrying sugar cane from farm to mills.

Started in July 2019, the farm-to-mill road involves construction of a two-span bridge traversing Jalaur River in Barangay Gemat-y and two lane road with paved shoulder which is set for completion by 2020.

The P91-million worth project was funded under the 2018 General Appropriations Act.
