President Rodrigo Duterte arrived on Friday night in Bangkok for the 35th ASEAN Summit at the heels of Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar slamming purveyors of fake news, ahead of the conference.

Thai and Filipino officials welcomed Mr. Duterte, who fell at the receiving end of false information in the altered front page of the Bangkok Post, which claimed the Thai King had admonished him to behave during the summit.

Andanar was emphatic in saying there was no such order from King Maha Vajiralongkorn for any leader, much more Duterte, to behave.

With Duterte’s group were, among others, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr., Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rolando Bautista, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia.

Also in the delegation were Andanar, presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo, Philippine Permanent Representative to ASEAN Noel Servigon and Philippine Ambassador to Thailand Mary Jo Bernardo-Aragon.

The ASEAN leaders are expected to further promote sustainable development while tackling climate change and other environmental challenges. They are also expected to discuss trade and territorial irritantsin the West Philippine Sea.
