Army to acquire supersonic missile

Army officials recently underwent briefing on India’s home-grown weapon aboard an Indian warship as they expressed keen interest in acquiring the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile.

Maj. Gen. Reynaldo M. Aquino and other Army officers were welcomed and toured by Commanding Officer Capt. Ashwin Arvind aboard INS Sahyadri docked at Pier 15, Manila South Harbor on Thursday.

Part of the tour and briefing was a discussion about India’s BrahMos which can be launched from ship, aircraft, submarine or land.

“The Philippine Army is interested in acquiring this type of missile as it will strengthen our coastal defense operations,” said Army Spokesperson Lt. Col. Ramon P. Zagala in a statement.

“The Philippine Army puts premium in upgrading the various areas of its defense capabilities as it plays a vital role in addressing external threats. We ensure the Filipino people that we are on a continuous endeavor of becoming a world-class Army ready to protect our country,” Zagala stated.

The interaction gave the Army a better glimpse on how its part in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Integrated Missile Defense System program could better be integrated with that of the Philippine Navy and Air Force for the defense of the country against external threats.

Earlier this month, the Army activated its first land-based missile system battery under the Army Artillery Regiment. The unit is currently working on its training programs before acquiring its future equipment.
