First coffee cupping lab opens

BAGUIO CITY — The Cordillera Region has now it’s first coffee cupping laboratory and it can be found in the Province of Kalinga.

The facility was turned over by Regional Technical Director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Cordillera Danilo Daguio to the Office of the Provincial Agriculture headed by Engr. Domingo Bakilan and Provincial Governor Ferdinand Tubban.

The Coffee Cupping Laboratory facility costs P283,180 and was entrusted to the Kalinga State University in Tabuk City represented by KSU president Dr. Eduardo Bagtang.

According to President Bagtang, Coffee cupping, or coffee tasting, is the practice of observing the taste and aroma of brewed coffee. It is a professional practice but can be done informally by anyone or by professionals known as “Q Graders.”

Through this laboratory and equipment, Kalinga may improve food through research and food technology.
